ESPN McCarron apology: Katherine Webb commentary 'went too far'

The ESPN McCarron apology drew mixed views in the wake of Brent Musberger's commentary of AJ McCarron's girlfriend Katherine Webb. The network says the veteran sports announcer "went too far" in his remarks on Miss Alabama at the recent BCS 2013 Bowl game between Notre Dame and Alabama. While some agree, others think the matter is blown out of proportion.

E!Online, in a Jan. 8 report, suggested that Musberger must have realized he got carried away from his excessive commentary and time given to Webb after a backlash ensued.

The ESPN apology read:

    "We always try to capture interesting storylines and the relationship between an Auburn grad who is Miss Alabama and the current Alabama quarterback certainly met that test," said the statement. "However, we apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far and Brent understands that."
