The Battle of Stalingrad
(August 23, 1942 – February 2, 1943) was the major battle of World War
II in which Nazi Germany and its allies fought the Soviet Union. Volgograd, formerly called Tsaritsyn (1589–1925) and known as Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961, is an important industrial city and the administrative center.
